The Czech Republic prepares to observe St. Wenceslas Day, also referred to as Czech Statehood Day, on September 28, 2026. The holiday commemorates the feast of St. Wenceslas, a patron saint and central symbol of Czech statehood who was a member of the Přemyslid dynasty. Due to the 2016 retail opening hours law, all stores with a sales area exceeding 200 square meters must remain closed. This regulation affects major supermarket supermarket, hypermarket, and hypermarket chains, though exceptions home improvement chains. Exceptions are made for smaller shops, pharmacies, gas stations, and retail outlets located at transport hubs like airports or railway stations. In addition to the retail closures, the Ministry of Finance is hosting its tenth annual Open House Day to mark the holiday. The event features guided tours of historic ministry buildings and demonstrations involving customs dogs and presentations on smuggled goods.
