The wave of serious traffic crashes that began in the Czech Republic in late July 2026 has continued to expand, marked by a period described as “Black Monday” where six people died in a series of accidents. These incidents included a fatal multi-car pile-up on the I/35 near Holovousy, a woman struck by a car, and a collision between a driver and a cyclist that resulted in life-threatening injuries. In Loučovice, a BMW driver crashed through a fence into a house, while an intoxicated individual on an electric scooter collided with his son. By July 30, high-severity incidents continued. In Oldřichovice, a 21-year-old BMW driver sustained severe head, chest, and leg injuries after striking an electric pole; three passengers were also injured. Near Heřmánkovice, a 77-year-old motorcyclist died in a head-on collision with a car that entered the opposite lane, prompting a negligent-homicide investigation. In Slovakia, a 39-year-old motorcyclist died on the II/504 after colliding with a Volkswagen that ran a red STOP signal. In mid-August, a fatal collision involving two trucks and a passenger car occurred near the Branisko tunnel on the Czech D1 highway, killing a 52-year-old driver and leaving her 18-year-old daughter in a coma. Road works continue to impact regional transit. Slovakia’s D1 highway is undergoing barrier replacement, and the D2 near Moravské Sv. Ján has faced extensive jams. Additionally, infrastructure developments and protests regarding the D35 highway route in the Czech Republic remain ongoing topics of regional concern. Recent incidents in the Czech Republic include a multi-vehicle collision on the D1 near Holubice involving three trucks and four cars, causing five injuries and damages exceeding 1.8 million CZK.
