Czech senior social engagement and volunteering
Overview
The social role of senior citizens in the Czech Republic is evolving from traditional stereotypes toward active community participation. While early observations highlight a generation shaped by specific cultural movements and a preference for arts and craftsmanship, they often face economic challenges due to pension limitations.
This engagement has manifested in structured intergenerational volunteering. Programs such as ‘PŘEČTI’, which utilizes ‘storytelling grandmothers and grandfathers’ to read to children in kindergartens, have been accredited by the Ministry of the Interior since 2017. Additionally, seniors provide psychosocial support in healthcare settings, such as at Thomayer University Hospital in Prague, where they act as companions for patients.
Through organizations like Mezi námi, these initiatives now span all fourteen Czech regions, involving over 400 schools and senior facilities, with more than 18,000 participants recorded to date.
