The Czech National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) announced two specific free-entry days for most state-owned castles, châteaux, and monasteries on August 30 and September 27, 2026. Due to capacity limits, visitors are required to use an online reservation system. This move follows concerns from Czech families regarding high admission costs at sites like Hluboká and Konopiště Castles. Expanding on these efforts, the Czech Ministry of Culture announced that state-run galleries and museums will offer free admission to permanent exhibitions on the first Sunday of every month, beginning September 6. Minister of Culture Oto Klempíř stated that this initiative aims to make culture accessible to a wider audience, expanding upon previous programs that focused on seniors, children, and people with disabilities. The monthly gallery program is scheduled to run through the end of the year, with potential continuation into 2027. Participating institutions include the National Gallery Prague, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, the Olomouc Museum of Art, the National Museum, and the Moravian Museum, among others. To mitigate the loss of ticket sales, the Ministry of Culture intends to compensate institutions using its existing budget, asserting the move will not require additional state funds. The policy has triggered political friction. MEP Danuše Nerudová questioned the compensation methods for lost income and engaged in a social media exchange with Klempíř, during which she referenced his past cooperation with the StB (State Security) in the 1980s. While some sites, such as the Museum of Romani Culture, expect minimal impact, larger institutions like the National Museum rely more heavily on admission revenue. The Ministry plans to evaluate the program’s financial impact by mid-fourth quarter.
