Czech wildlife rescue and conservation efforts
Overview
Wildlife rescue operations in the Czech Republic are managing significant volumes of injured and distressed fauna, often driven by environmental factors and human infrastructure.
In southern Moravia, the Rajhrad Wildlife Rescue Station marked 25 years of service, noting that it rescues nearly 800 animals annually, including birds of prey, mammals, and reptiles. The station manages a high volume of daily calls and must adapt its routines to handle heat waves.
Broader rescue efforts, such as those at the Pasíčka Rescue Station, report treating approximately 3,000 animals each year. These facilities face increasing challenges from extreme heat, which affects young animals, and the persistent threat of ‘death poles’—high-voltage power lines that pose an electrocution risk to various bird species. To combat these issues, the ČEZ Foundation has provided 1 million CZK to modernize the Pasíčka facility, allowing for the construction of new multifunctional aviaries for the rehabilitation of birds and mammals.
