Czech‑Slovak fish farms drought crisis
Overview
In early August 2026, severe heat and a lack of rain created a major water shortage across the Czech Republic and western Slovakia. The state‑owned Rybářství Třeboň fishery reported a 37 % drop in its water volume, prompting early pond harvests, reduced feeding, intensified aeration and emergency fish removals to avoid mass die‑offs. Simultaneously, Slovak fishing groups rescued nearly 500 kg of carp, pike, catfish and other species from drying streams in the Považie region.
Two days later, the drought’s impact deepened in eastern Slovakia. The 110‑hectare Perín‑Chym fish ponds, a protected wetland, faced record‑low water levels and temperatures approaching 35 °C. Oxygen depletion forced continuous aeration, raising costs and threatening a catastrophic fish mortality before the October harvest. Operators began liming to stabilise pH, but the underlying drought remained beyond local control, highlighting the escalating crisis for aquaculture in the region.
