Dairy product adulteration crackdowns in Odisha
Overview
Municipal authorities in Odisha have conducted multiple enforcement drives to combat the sale of adulterated and substandard dairy products.
In Kataka, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) seized approximately 7,000 kg of adulterated paneer during a 48-hour period. Iodine testing indicated that only 30 kg of the stock was fit for consumption, while the rest contained starch, refined wheat flour, and other synthetic agents. Some high-end hotels were allegedly using products containing only 40 percent pure milk.
Following these events, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) seized and destroyed nearly 400 kg of suspected spurious milk products, including paneer, chhena, khoa, and rabri. These raids targeted manufacturing units, hotels, and restaurants, with officials finding that traders were mixing powdery substances into dairy to increase profits.
The crackdown has led to significant economic hardship for local dairy farmers. In villages such as Kantagoth and Bhaliadanda, producers report that sales have been halved as retailers grow wary of food safety. While the All Odisha Gopala Samaj has welcomed the enforcement, they suggested the issue may be driven by middlemen and large-scale powder traders rather than the farmers themselves.
As local production faces shortages and safety concerns, much of the supply for major cities like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Berhampur—which require an estimated 80 to 100 metric tons daily—is being sourced from other regions, including Kolkata.
