The 63rd edition of the Damascus International Fair, running from August 26 to September 4, 2026, is organized under the theme ‘Syria is shining again’. The event is designed to support economic recovery, reconstruction, and the promotion of Syrian exports. Prior to opening to the general public, the fair held a three-day business-focused period for investors, businesspeople, and official delegations. This phase featured approximately 1,000 entities representing nearly 60 countries. During these sessions, various agreements and memorandums of understanding were signed in sectors including industry, transport, water, agriculture, logistics, and trade. While formal unified financial totals for these contracts have not been announced, industry leaders emphasized the fair’s role in transitioning Syria toward a productive economy through local manufacturing and import substitution to reduce reliance on foreign currency. Saudi Arabia is participating with a pavilion representing over 50 national companies from the goods and services sectors. This delegation includes the Saudi Export Development Authority, the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, the National Center for Palms and Dates, the Saudi Export-Import Bank, and the Saudi-Syrian Business Council. Their involvement aims to increase non-oil exports, explore opportunities within the Syrian market, and strengthen bilateral trade ties. As the fair continues, it has evolved into a platform for both economic investment and cultural exhibition. Economic experts suggest that the participation of international entities, including European and German companies, indicates a ‘restoration of confidence in the Syrian business sector’. The event has transitioned into an ‘investment gateway’ for sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and construction. Simultaneously, the Syrian Ministry of Culture is using the fair to showcase national heritage. A dedicated pavilion features documentation of historical sites, including Palmyra, Aleppo Citadel, and Ugarit, alongside contemporary folk arts and traditional handicrafts such as mosaic, stained glass, and copper work.
