Danantara is implementing a large-scale structural overhaul of Indonesia’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to improve efficiency and profitability. The agency aims to reduce the number of SOEs from 1,074 entities to fewer than 200 by 2030, addressing significant annual losses and structural inefficiencies. Chief Operating Officer Dony Oskaria has announced a five-year roadmap to achieve this goal. The strategy includes the liquidation of 213 companies and the consolidation of approximately 200 others through mergers across sectors such as industrial zones, hospitals, and insurance. Currently, 52% of these state-owned companies are reportedly losing approximately Rp23 trillion annually, with systemic inefficiencies costing an estimated US$2 billion per year. As part of this transformation, Danantara has already closed or streamlined 364 loss-making or inefficient companies. The restructuring strategy involves a four-pillar approach utilizing mergers and liquidations, such as consolidating 23 industrial zones into one entity, merging 60 hospitals under a single parent company, and unifying 120 hotels. Additionally, the agency is exploring investments in the national textile industry to support labor-intensive employment. In specific sector developments, Danantara canceled a planned merger between PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) and PT PELNI, citing fundamentally different business models between port infrastructure management and maritime transportation. Additionally, the The agency is also managing waste-to-energy projects and has issued new professional guidelines prohibiting directors and commissioners from using company facilities for personal use.
