Spanish citizen Daniel Sancho continues to serve a life sentence in Thailand for the 2023 murder of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta on Koh Samui island. The case remains under appeal in the Phuket Appeals Court, which has not yet announced a decision date. However, defense attorney Marcos García-Montes has confirmed that the Phuket Court of Appeal has already drafted its ruling and sent it to the Koh Samui Provincial Court. The legal process faces four potential outcomes: maintaining the life sentence, reducing the penalty, ordering a retrial, or increasing the sentence. The defense is seeking to reclassify the crime from premeditated murder to manslaughter to facilitate a potential transfer to Spain. Defense lawyer Carmen Balfagón previously noted that earlier legal strategies may have delayed this transfer, stating it would have been ‘easier to accept the sentence’ to begin the international process. Sancho is currently held in the high-security Surat Thani prison, a facility noted for strict schedules, overcrowding, and limited communication. While prison. Recent reports indicate he receives regular correspondence offering moral and financial support, he his communication is said strictly limited to have few close friends remaining. On August 15, three friends, including Jaime Onieva Molas, were scheduled one weekly video call with his father and legal team. While he reportedly receives love letters from various individuals, a Spanish woman was recently denied entry to visit him at the facility after overcoming initial bureaucratic hurdles. an attempt to visit him, due to strict regulations regarding non-family visitors. Sancho’s grandmother, Noela Aguirre, has maintained her belief in his innocence and stated he is doing well despite his circumstances. She also noted that legal action is being considered against false reports involving her son, actor Rodolfo Sancho, which allegedly utilized artificial intelligence.
