Danish detention centers have faced significant operational pressure due to capacity mandates. Facilities such as Næstved Arrest have operated at 144 percent of their intended capacity, forcing staff to use bunk beds and double occupancy in single-occupant cells. Prison officers reported that these cramped conditions have negatively impacted the quality of life for both inmates and staff, making conflict management more difficult. In response to broader criminal justice reforms aimed at establishing approximately 2,000 new prison places, Danmarks Fængsler has seen a surge in recruitment. The agency reported its largest student intake in seven years, with 280 new students enrolling to train for roles such as prison, transport, and security officers. While Justice Minister Nicolai Wammen attributed this to recruitment initiatives including wage increases, the Prison Federation noted that retention remains a challenge, stating that approximately 40 percent of probationary employees do not remain in their positions. Despite recent enrollment successes, Danmarks Fængsler continues to face a deficit of approximately 400 prison officers, with only about 1,900 positions filled against a political target of 2,300. To address these shortages, a pop-up training school in Odense is scheduled to reopen in January. Additionally, a new transport unit of 20 uniformed staff members has been established in Ringsted. Relocated from Copenhagen, this unit aims to increase efficiency for inmate movement across Zealand and improve local visibility to attract more applicants.
