Danish road safety and visibility concerns

Overview

Recent studies conducted by Codan Forsikring, Børneulykkesfonden, and Gjensidige have highlighted significant visibility risks for pedestrians and cyclists in Denmark during dark hours.

Research indicates that 56 percent of Danish motorists reported near-miss incidents involving cyclists or pedestrians who were difficult to see within the last three years. Approximately eight percent of respondents reported that these situations resulted in actual collisions, while nearly one in four drivers had to brake hard or swerve to avoid an accident.

Further findings reveal a lack of awareness regarding traffic regulations; 44 percent of Danes are reportedly unaware of specific bicycle lighting rules, which require lights to be used between sunset and sunrise. While using reflectors can increase visibility from 25–30 meters to approximately 140 meters under low beam headlights, more than one-third of the population rarely or never uses them.
