Overview

In early July 2026 the Danube’s level fell below one metre in Bulgaria, but navigation continued. Within weeks the river reached a historic low of minus 127 cm in Serbia’s Vojvodina region. Provincial authorities declared a state of emergency and allocated 270 million dinars for urgent works such as dredging, canal deepening, and extra intake structures. The decline threatened irrigation, agriculture, energy supply and the river’s ecosystem, and it disrupted traffic, leaving tourist vessels stranded in Bulgaria and Hungary.

On 27 July the Vojvodina emergency board extended the declaration to the towns of Sombor, Kula and Vrbas, chaired by provincial president Maja Gojković, with funds directed to the public water company Vode Vojvodine. Interior Minister Ivica Dačić led the national emergency board, ordering measures that include deepening inlet channels, sediment removal, mandatory diesel stocks, protection of irrigation and drinking water supplies, and safeguarding the Đerdap hydro‑plant, now operating at about one‑third of normal output. Outdoor work was limited during peak heat of 35‑40 °C and drones were deployed for monitoring.

River‑transport capacity fell to 30‑40 % of normal and fuel imports were reduced to 20‑25 % of planned volumes. Tourism was further affected as tourists were evacuated from a boat in Bulgaria and fifteen vessels remained stranded in Hungary. Fisheries, agriculture and energy production continue to face severe threats across Serbia and neighboring Danube states.
