Danube River rescue incidents
Entities: 29‑year‑old male swimmer · Pest County Search‑and‑Rescue Service (HUNGO) · 29-year-old male swimmer · Dunakeszi · Pest County Police
Overview
In early July, a 24‑year‑old man missing near Straubing, Germany, was found dead after an extensive search along the Danube.
On August 3, four people entered the Danube at the free beach in Dunakeszi, Hungary. Strong currents swept them away; nearby stand‑up paddleboard users rescued three, while a 29‑year‑old man remained missing. The Pest County Police, the local river police and the HUNGO rescue service launched a coordinated operation using divers, drones and patrol boats, but by nightfall the swimmer had not been located. Authorities opened an administrative investigation and warned that swimming in the river carries significant risks.
These incidents highlight persistent safety challenges and rescue efforts on the Danube across Central Europe.
