Dar-es-Salam landfill collapse in Guinea

Overview

In late August 2026, Guinea experienced a major disaster when the Dar-es-Salam landfill in the Gbessia commune collapsed. Initial reports indicated a death toll of 34 people, with local groups noting that residents had previously warned authorities about the site’s instability.

By early September, the confirmed death toll rose to 36, including 19 Guineans and 17 Sierra Leoneans. A mass funeral was held in Conakry on September 4, attended by a delegation led by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah. The collapse destroyed homes belonging to waste-pickers and nearby families, leaving 33 injured and hundreds requiring emergency shelter.

In response to the disaster, Guinean authorities have planned the demolition of at-risk homes and the rehousing of approximately 1,500 people. The closure of the site has also triggered a waste management crisis in Conakry, as municipalities must now transport refuse over 40 kilometers to Baritodé. Critics have pointed to the failure to implement a 2021 waste management master plan, which intended for a new technical landfill in Baritodé to be operational by 2025.
