Dasosaurus tocantinensis discovery in Brazil

Overview

Researchers have identified a new species of herbivorous sauropod, named ‘Dasosaurus tocantinensis’, following the discovery of fossils at a construction site for a road-rail terminal in Davinópolis, Maranhão, Brazil.

The remains, which include a 1.5-meter femur, ribs, vertebrae, and limb bones, date back approximately 120 million years. The find represents the largest dinosaur species identified in the state of Maranhão to date.

Microscopic analysis published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology indicates the species possessed growth characteristics shared by early sauropods and titanosaurs. Furthermore, the discovery suggests an evolutionary link to species found in Spain, supporting theories that dinosaur lineages migrated from North Africa to South America via the Gondwana supercontinent.
