Overview

South Korean digital service providers have experienced significant data breaches. In August 2026, e-Broadcasting, the operator of the SamproTV economic YouTube channel, confirmed that an external actor gained unauthorized access to its mobile application. The breach compromised approximately 460,000 pieces of user information, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, and service usage records. The leak also included nearly 3,000 instances of bank account information and 317 instances of credit card data.

Following this, in September 2026, a massive breach was confirmed at the streaming platform Tving. This incident compromised approximately 39.54 million user accounts, including 22.06 million active accounts. Investigators found that while passwords were encrypted, phone numbers and emails were exposed in plain text because encryption keys were also stolen. Additionally, 30.35GB of technical assets, including source code for recommendation algorithms and authentication systems, were leaked. The breach was attributed to the theft of a developer’s access key. The Ministry of Science and ICT identified several security failures at Tving, including improper storage of access keys and a failure to report the incident to the Korea Internet & Security Agency within the required timeframe.
