Data center thermal energy recovery initiatives

Overview

Efforts to repurpose waste heat from data centers are expanding through both operational implementation and research. In Odense, Denmark, Meta has been utilizing waste heat from its data center since 2020 to provide heating for approximately 9,000 homes. The facility converts about 90 percent of its electricity consumption into heat, which is transferred via heat pumps to the local district heating network.

Broadening this scope, research projects such as the CECS project are investigating advanced cooling methods and sustainable insulators to manage the thermal output of servers. Additionally, collaborations like the memorandum of understanding between IGNIS and REBI aim to develop heat networks that link data center cooling systems to residential, tertiary, and industrial processes to promote decarbonization.
