David Silva Rojas AI authorship controversy

Overview

Peruvian author David Silva Rojas is facing allegations that his novella, ‘Donde el agua trabaja’ (Where the Water Works), was written using artificial intelligence. The work was the recipient of the inaugural Almadía-Ventosa Arrufat International Short Novel Prize, a competition that expressly prohibits the use of AI tools.

The controversy began following an investigation by the Spanish newspaper El País, which reported that the Pangram 4.1 detector classified 99% of the text as AI-generated. In response, the Mexican publishing house Almadía suspended scheduled promotional events in Spain and initiated a formal review of the case.

Silva Rojas has denied the allegations, asserting that he conceived, wrote, and revised the work himself based on research into agricultural labor conditions in Ica, Peru. He stated that he has preserved manuscript versions and research notebooks to provide to the publisher as evidence. The author has argued that high percentages from AI detection tools should not be viewed as definitive proof and has expressed his intention to cooperate with the editorial investigation.
