The development of the DC Universe series ‘Lanterns’ has focused on establishing a narrative with significant weight and unique genre elements. Initially, writer Tom King emphasized a commitment to ensuring the project serves as a meaningful standalone story rather than disposable content between theatrical releases. As details emerged, the series was described as a blend of cosmic science fiction, neo-western, and murder mystery set in Nebraska. Creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King aim to move away from traditional superhero tropes by focusing on existential themes and the human experience through characters Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Following its release, the series achieved significant viewership on HBO Max, drawing 9.3 million viewers and earning a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
