Death investigation of Albert Aracena in Moca

Overview

Following the disappearance of Albert de Jesús Aracena Núñez on August 4, authorities in Moca, Espaillat, recovered his remains in a wooded area of the La Chancleta community. His body was found in an advanced state of decomposition, buried in a hole, wrapped in a tarp, and covered with lime. Investigators also recovered dismantled parts of the victim’s motorcycle at the scene.

The investigation centered on the New York Grill (also known as New York Green Gallery), a recreational center where Aracena was last seen. The establishment's owner, Iván Arias Espinosa, was arrested, and authorities identified a Haitian national involved in the incident who remained at large. The owners initially claimed that Aracena had accidentally drowned in a pool and that they buried him to prevent the business from being closed.

While a preliminary autopsy suggested drowning, new forensic reports from the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) have updated the cause of death to mechanical asphyxia. Inacif has classified the incident as a “violent death, of medico-legal homicide etiology.”

Espaillat prosecutor Yorelbin Rivas stated that the investigation is focused on the concealment of the corpse as the Public Ministry works to clarify the exact circumstances of the death. A hearing to determine coercion measures against Arias Espinosa is scheduled for Friday.
