Death of athlete Syabilla Rizkia during sports event

Overview

Syabilla Rizkia Putri Raharja, a 22-year-old diver from Jepara, died on October 25, 2026, during a 3,000-meter open water finswimming competition at Awann Costa Beach in Semarang. The incident occurred during the Central Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov XVII). Prior to the accident, Rizkia had won two gold medals in pool diving events.

During the sea diving event, witnesses reported that she appeared to wave her hands twice while approximately 200 meters from the finish line. Although rescue teams attempted to offer assistance, she reportedly declined to end the race early before eventually sinking. Preliminary medical findings indicated drowning.

In response to the tragedy, Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir stated, “There is no victory more valuable than the life of an athlete,” emphasizing that safety procedures must be the top priority. The Indonesian Underwater Sports Association (PB POSSI) has formed an investigation team to evaluate medical readiness, rescue response times, and safety protocols. Local authorities and the Central Java provincial government are also conducting evaluations to prevent future occurrences.
