Berry was a prolific writer of more than 40 books, including the Port William novels and various poetry collections such as ‘The Mad Farmer Poems’. After teaching at New York University during the 1960s, he returned to his family farmland in Port Royal, where he spent much of his life working the land and writing, often utilizing traditional methods like pencil and paper.

He specifically critiqued industrial agriculture and corporate agribusiness, advocating for a deep, spiritual connection to the land and local communities. In his 1977 work, ‘The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture’, he argued that physical health cannot be separated from spiritual and cultural stability.

A prominent voice in environmentalism and conservation, Berry’s philosophy explored the interconnectedness of faith, the environment, and local community. A recipient of the National Humanities Medal in 2010, his legacy continues to influence writers, environmentalists, and local-food activists.

Following his death, there has been a surge in interest in his literary works, with the Louisville Free Public Library reporting waiting lists for 30 of his titles. Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Barbara Kingsolver praised his influence, stating his writing provided her the ‘literary liberation to embrace her small-town roots’ and challenged the ‘destructive myth of the self-made individual’. His 1973 poem, ‘Manifesto’, remains a central part of his legacy, particularly its concluding call to ‘practice resurrection’ as a way of living in opposition to worldly logic.
