Former undefeated Puerto Rican professional boxer Prichard Colón has died at the age of 33. His death, confirmed by his family and boxing organizations, father, Richard Colón, via social media, follows more than a decade of living in a vegetative state caused by a traumatic brain injury sustained during a 2015 match against Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia. During that bout, Colón reportedly suffered multiple illegal “rabbit punches” to the back of the head. Despite reporting dizziness to medical staff, the fight continued, after which Colón suffered a subdural hematoma and brain hemorrhage. He spent 221 days in a coma and required constant medical assistance for the remainder of his life. Colón, who held a professional record of 16-0, was named an honorary world champion by the World Boxing Council (WBC). The incident led to the implementation of the “Prichard Colón Rule” and other stricter medical protocols and safety regulations within the sport to penalize illegal strikes to the back of the head. The World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Organization have also honored his memory. Funeral services are scheduled to take place in Winter Park, Florida, in mid-August 2026.
