Death of Curtis Flowers
Overview
Curtis Flowers, a Mississippi man whose legal battles became a landmark case regarding jury discrimination, has died at age 56. His family confirmed his death occurred on a Wednesday at his home in Winona, Mississippi.
Flowers spent 22 years on death row for the 1996 killings of four people at a furniture store. His case gained national prominence because he was subjected to six separate trials for the same crime. In 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned his conviction and death sentence in a 7–2 decision, with the court ruling that prosecutors had unconstitutionally excluded Black prospective jurors from his trials.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, Flowers was released on bond in December 2019, and Mississippi prosecutors dismissed all charges against him in 2020. In 2021, he was awarded $500,000 under state wrongful-imprisonment compensation laws. As of the latest reports, a cause of death has not been released and local authorities are investigating.
