Country music icon Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80 following a battle with cancer. She passed away at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville; her family had reportedly kept her illness private to “maintain an atmosphere of optimism for her loved ones and fans.” Her death triggered a massive surge in music consumption, with global Spotify streams increasing by over 1,260%. Following her passing, several acts of vandalism were reported, including antisemitic slurs on her Wikipedia page. Her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was also targeted; the name was scratched and memorial candles were kicked over. The Hollywood Historic Trust has since completed the restoration of the star at 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, making it viewable to the public again. The restored star now features butterfly and flower tributes to honor her personal legacy. Legacy tributes and new projects continue to emerge. California has designated September 25 as ‘Dolly Parton Day,’ and Alabama is rolling out specialty license plates to support her Imagination Library. In Tennessee, Governor Bill Lee and the Nashville International Airport authority have announced intentions to rename the airport in her honor, a move receiving unanimous support from the Nashville Metropolitan ~~Council.~~ Council and a massive public petition. Dollywood has announced plans to honor her through additions to the Robert F. Thomas Chapel and a new character, ‘The Dream Maker,’ arriving in 2027. Further honors include ‘DollyFest: The Celebration of a Lifetime,’ a series of public events scheduled for Nashville and London in 2027. Additionally, a Broadway musical titled ‘Dolly: A True Original Musical’ is set to begin previews in New York City on December 7, 2026, with an official opening in January 2027. Broadway marquees are also scheduled to dim in her honor on September 8.
