Gloria Steinem, a prominent journalist and central figure of the second-wave feminist movement, died on September 2, 2026, at the age of 92. She passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by loved ones. Steinem gained national recognition in 1963 for an undercover exposé regarding working conditions at the Playboy Club. Her career included co-founding Ms. magazine, which helped nationalize the women's rights movement in the United States, as well as organizations such as the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Women’s Action Alliance, and the Women’s Media Center. Her activism focused on gender equality in the workplace, reproductive rights, and combating domestic violence. She was also a champion for the establishment of rape crisis centers and shelters for battered women. Throughout her career, she emphasized the intersectionality of social justice, frequently crediting Black women leaders such as Alice Walker and Dorothy Pitman Hughes for shaping the core principles of the feminist movement. Her advocacy also extended to LGBTQ+ rights and gender equity in sports through Title IX. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Her death, occurring within days of the passing of fellow activist Robin Morgan, has prompted renewed discussion regarding her legacy. This includes debates over her past cooperation with the CIA to establish the Independent Research Service, an organization that facilitated the travel of American students to Soviet-organized World Youth Festivals to present Western-style liberalism. In her 2015 memoir, she described this involvement as “liberal, nonviolent, and honorable.” Reflections on her passing have highlighted her ability to use journalism as a form of activism.
