The death of Barry Mitchell, a former bassist for the rock band Queen, has been confirmed by the group’s official archivist, Greg Brooks. Mitchell, who was between 76 and 80 years old, served as the band’s second bassist during an early formative period between August 1970 and January 1971. During his tenure, Mitchell performed in 13 concerts alongside original members Freddie Mercury, Brian May, and Roger Taylor before the arrival of John Deacon in February 1971. He is credited with contributing bass lines and riffs to early tracks such as ‘Liar’ and ‘Son and Daughter’. Following his departure, the band briefly worked with Doug Bogie before the iconic lineup was completed. In a 2018 ~~interview,~~ interview with Rolling Stone, Mitchell reflected on his departure, noting that he did not initially foresee the band’s eventual global success and that his musical interests did not fully align with the group’s direction at that time. Following his period with Queen, Mitchell performed with the band Tiger (formerly Crushed Butler) and later returned to the music scene in the 1990s with Jayne Raydio. He is survived by two daughters.
