Kayla Saager-Beckley, a former Binghamton University women’s soccer captain and standout athlete, died in Tulsa at the age of 30. Saager-Beckley, a 2017 America East Striker of the Year, was described by her former coach as a “dangerous and dynamic forward.” Subsequent reports clarified that Saager-Beckley died suddenly during a workout and was found unresponsive following a medical emergency. According to Tulsa football assistant coach Tre Lamb, she was found unresponsive approximately 10 minutes after she began working out. At the time of her death, she was pregnant with her and her husband’s first child, a daughter named Sawyer. Her husband, John Beckley, is an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa. Saager-Beckley had a distinguished career, including playing professionally in the Czech Republic and later working in college soccer scouting, recruiting, and as an assistant coach at Troy University. To honor her memory, the University of Tulsa football program planned to wear helmet stickers during a home game against East Texas A&M. Following her death on September 9, the family released a statement noting that the loss also included her unborn daughter. While an official cause of death has not been announced, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The Bee Foundation, an organization dedicated to brain aneurysm research and awareness.
