Death of Goiás State Deputy Amilton Filho

Overview

Goiás State Deputy Amilton Filho (MDB) died at age 41 following a car accident on the BR-050 highway near Cristalina. The collision occurred in the early hours of Saturday, September 26, when Filho’s vehicle struck a parked semi-trailer while he was returning from a campaign event. While Filho died at the scene, a driver and a campaign videographer were seriously injured and hospitalized.

In response to the accident, Bruno Peixoto, President of the Legislative Assembly of Goiás, declared five days of official mourning. Following a meeting with family members and political leaders in Anápolis, Ana Caroline Guimarães, a psychologist and the deputy’s widow, has been chosen to replace him as a candidate for the Legislative Assembly of Goiás (Alego). Representing the MDB, Guimarães will run under the electoral name ‘Carol do Amilton’ and will appear on electronic voting machines using her late husband’s number and photograph due to the proximity of the elections.

The MDB has stated that Guimarães’ party affiliation is regular and meets all legal requirements for the substitution. Regarding the immediate vacancy, Filho’s first substitute, Thiago Albernaz, is expected to assume the mandate for the remainder of the term ending in January 2027, with plans to maintain the deputy’s existing office staff.
