Soulis (Souli) Markopoulos, a legendary figure in Greek basketball, died at the age of 77. His career spanned five decades, during which he set a record for the most head coaching appearances in the Greek top division with over 700 games. One of his most notable achievements was leading PAOK to a Korac Cup victory in 1994. Following his death, mourning and condolences were expressed by the Hellenic Basketball Federation and various major clubs, including PAOK, Aris, Iraklis, AEK, and Marousi. A funeral service was held at the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki, attended by relatives, friends, colleagues, and members of the Greek sporting community, before his burial at the Thermi cemetery. In a subsequent tribute, PAOK BC honored Markopoulos during a ceremony at the Palataki prior to their EuroCup match against Manresa. To recognize his deep connection to the club’s history, Markopoulos’s daughter was presented with the official game sheet from the 1993 Korac Cup final in Trieste. Colleagues remembered him for his professionalism and integrity, noting his lifelong dedication to the sport through hundreds of thousands of training sessions.
