Spyros Chalvatzis, a prominent leader of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and former Member of Parliament, died on September 12, 2026, at the age of 79 following a long battle with serious health issues. A lifelong activist born in Kozani in 1947, Chalvatzis was a significant figure in the Greek labor movement and the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE). He served as the Secretary of the KNE Central Council until 1986 and was a long-standing member of the KKE Central Committee's Political Bureau from 1986 until 2009. His political history included facing persecution and exile to Gyaros, Leros, and Oropos during the Greek military junta. He was also arrested in 1967 while serving as the secretary of the Lambrakis Youth in Kastoria, and again in November 1973 following the Polytechnic uprising. Following the restoration of democracy, he held high-ranking positions within the KKE and served as an MP for Athens B from 2007 to 2014, in addition to holding local government roles in Athens. A political funeral was held on Tuesday, September 15, at the courtyard of the Association of Imprisoned and Exiled Resistance Fighters (SFEA) in Athens. During the ceremony, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, General Secretary of the KKE, delivered a tribute praising Chalvatzis for his “consistency and commitment to the movement” despite the persecutions faced during the dictatorship.
