A founding member of the Subaltern Studies Collective, Sarkar was recognized for transforming the study of modern Indian history by focusing on the experiences of social groups, classes, and popular movements rather than elite-centered accounts. His scholarship, including works such as ‘The Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, 1903-1908’, ‘Modern India: 1885–1947’, and ‘Writing Social History’, challenged both uncritical nationalist mythologies and the Cambridge School’s focus on elite factionalism.

Born in Calcutta in 1939, Sarkar held teaching positions at the University of Calcutta, the University of Burdwan, and the University of Delhi. His career was defined by a resistance to various prevailing historical agendas, including narrow Marxist economic views, post-modernist trends, and the rise of religious majoritarianism. He remained committed to analyzing social conflict and economics while resisting ideological pressures within contemporary Indian academic discourse.

Colleagues have noted his commitment to integrating rigorous inquiry with socialist values and his defense of civil liberties and academic fairness. He is survived by his wife, historian Tanika Sarkar, and his son, Aditya Sarkar, an associate professor of South Asian History at the University of Warwick.
