Emma Bonino, the 78-year-old leader of +Europa and a prominent figure in Italian and European politics, passed away in Rome on Friday, September 11, 2026, following a severe respiratory crisis. Her political party, Più Europa, confirmed the news after she had been treated in the intensive care unit at Santo Spirito hospital. It has since been noted that Bonino had been battling lung cancer since 2015. Her five-decade career was defined by leadership in the Radical Party and Più Europa, characterized by tireless advocacy for civil rights, women’s autonomy, the legalization of abortion, and the abolition of the death penalty. She was also a vocal proponent of the Green Pass and military aid to Ukraine. While her liberal economic views and pro-Atlanticist, pro-Israel stances made her a polarizing figure, she remains an icon of political struggle and European integration. Following her death, political leaders expressed widespread condolences. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described her as a “significant and recognizable voice in the nation's public life,” while Italian President Sergio Mattarella described her as a vital reference point for the Republic. A secular state funeral was held on Tuesday, September 15, at the Campidoglio in Rome. The ceremony, held in the Sala della Protomoteca, was attended by high-ranking officials including President Mattarella, Prime Minister Meloni, Senate President Ignazio La Russa, Elly Schlein, Matteo Renzi, Giuseppe Conte, and former Prime Ministers Romano Prodi and Enrico Letta. Her coffin was draped in the European Union flag. During the service, President Mattarella praised her tenacious commitment to liberal, feminist, and pro-European values, specifically noting her battles against world hunger and her role in establishing the International Criminal Court. Carla Taibi, Bonino’s longtime assistant, described her as a “teacher, friend, and above all, an example,” emphasizing her dedication to the rule of law and women’s freedoms.
