Runa Hirata, an 8-year-old idol trainee with the Nagoya-based DIANNA Project, died in the early hours of September 25 due to myocarditis resulting from an influenza infection. Her management agency, SISTERMANAGEMENT, and her family confirmed the news on September 28. The sudden passing has shocked fans, as Hirata—known to fans as ‘Luna-chan’—had performed in a public show as recently as September 20, sharing her excitement on social media shortly after the event. Her family noted that approximately one-third of her eight years of life had been dedicated to idol activities. In a social media tribute, her family requested that she be remembered as an idol, noting that music was central to her life. Following the family’s wishes, the funeral and wake were held privately with only close relatives and acquaintances in attendance. The agency has expressed deep sorrow and requested privacy for the family during this time. Her followers, whom she affectionately referred to as ‘gozarumas’, have expressed significant mourning. Following her death, medical experts highlighted that while influenza is typically recoverable, it can cause severe complications such as myocarditis, encephalitis, and pneumonia. Professionals emphasized that administering antiviral treatments within 48 hours of symptom onset is critical to mitigating these risks.
