Death of jazz singer Cassandra Wilson

Overview

Grammy-winning jazz singer, songwriter, and producer Cassandra Wilson has died at the age of 70. According to her manager and the Hinds County Coroner, she passed away peacefully at her home in her native Jackson, Mississippi, surrounded by family and friends.

Wilson was highly regarded for her genre-blending contralto voice, which integrated jazz with blues, folk, pop, R&B, country, and funk. Her musical identity was deeply rooted in the Mississippi Delta and shaped by the social landscape of the American South. After moving to New York in the 1980s, she worked with the M-Base collective alongside musicians such as Steve Coleman. She achieved major success in the 1990s after signing with Blue Note Records, notably with her 1993 release ‘Blue Light ‘Til Dawn’.

Her career highlights included winning two Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album for ‘New Moon Daughter’ (1997) and ‘Loverly’ (2009), as well as being named an NEA Jazz Master in 2022. Her later work included a 2015 tribute to Billie Holiday.

In addition to her musical legacy, reports noted that her social media activity supporting Donald Trump during the 2020 presidential election period had previously sparked debate among some of her fans.
