Death of Juliette Willmann in Patagonia avalanche
Overview
French professional freeride skier Juliette Willmann, 29, died following a slab avalanche at Cerro Crestón near El Chaltén, Argentina, on September 29. Willmann was practicing backcountry skiing with her partner, Pierre-Idris Mehdi, when the snow release swept the couple approximately 400 meters down the slope.
Willmann was found buried under roughly 1.5 meters of snow and could not be resuscitated. Mehdi was rescued alive and transported to a hospital in El Calafate, where he was reported to be out of danger. The incident prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving National Parks, Gendarmería Nacional, Civil Defense, and provincial health and agrarian councils.
A former competitor on the Freeride World Tour and winner of the 2018 Freeride World Qualifier, Willmann had recently focused on high-mountain exploration and filmmaking. Her death has drawn profound grief from the international winter sports community.
