Xaysomphone Phomvihane, President of the Lao National Assembly and a member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Politburo, passed away on August 8, 2026, at the age of 70 due to severe vasculitis. In response, Laos declared a five-day national mourning period from August 9 to August 13, with a state funeral scheduled for August 13 at That Luang Plaza in Vientiane. Vietnam observed two days of national mourning from August 10 to 11, instructing government agencies to fly mourning flags and suspend public entertainment. The Vietnamese National Assembly held a one-minute silence on August 10 to commemorate the deceased leader. To honor the deceased, Vietnam postponed or rescheduled several public activities, including the Miss World 2026 opening ceremony and various music releases. High-level Vietnamese delegations traveled to Vientiane to pay respects, reflecting the strategic partnership between the two nations. In addition to National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, a delegation led by Politburo member and Standing member of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu visited Vientiane. During this visit, the delegation expressed condolences to the family of Xaysomphone Phomvihane, and Tran Cam Tu held a meeting with Thongloun Sisoulith, the General Secretary and President of Laos, at the headquarters of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. On August 12, Bùi Thị Minh Hoài, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, sent a message of condolence to the Lao Front for National Development. The message described Phomvihane as an ‘elite and steadfast leader’ who dedicated his life to the development of Laos. It further noted his role as a ‘close comrade and friend to the Vietnamese people’ and highlighted his contributions to strengthening the special friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
