Mexican professional boxer Arturo ‘Lobito’ Torres died at age 26 following a brain injury sustained during a super lightweight match in Mexicali, Baja California. The injury occurred on September 19 during a bout against Gilberto ‘Torito’ García. García at Parque Vicente Guerrero. During the seventh round, the fight was stopped via technical knockout after Torres’ corner threw in and the towel referee intervened due to the heavy punishment he was receiving. Immediately following the stoppage, Torres collapsed in the ring and suffered convulsions. He was transported to the Hospital General de Mexicali, where doctors identified a brain clot and performed emergency surgery. Torres remained in an induced coma for several six days before his death was confirmed by his family on September 25. A professional since 2018, Torres held a record of 15 wins, 6 losses, and 3 draws. The Mexican Boxing Federation has expressed deep condolences to his family and the Baja California boxing community. His death has prompted renewed discussions regarding medical insurance and athlete insurance, safety protocols protocols, and medical conditions for professional boxers within the Mexican boxing community.
