Death of missing British student in Romania
Overview
George Smyth, an 18-year-old geology student from the University of Bristol, has been found dead in the Bucegi Mountains of Romania. Smyth had been missing since November 23 following a solo hiking trip.
During his disappearance, Smyth made an emergency call from the Țigănești area reporting that he was suffering from hypothermia, exhaustion, and disorientation. Search operations by the Salvamont mountain rescue service, utilizing drones, helicopters, and canine teams, were previously hampered by extreme weather, including dense fog and heavy snowfall.
Reports indicate that shepherds discovered parts of a human skeleton in a highly isolated area. Avon and Somerset Police noted that identification documents found with the remains are believed to belong to Smyth. His family described themselves as “devastated” by the news. Following formal identification, efforts will be made to repatriate his remains to the United Kingdom.
