Peter Byrne, the co-founder and vocalist of the British new wave duo Naked Eyes, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 74. An official statement from the band indicated that Byrne passed away on September 14 following a brief illness. Subsequent reports specify that his death followed an acute hemorrhagic stroke, with a death certificate noting colitis as a potential contributing underlying condition. Byrne, originally from Islington, North London, rose to international prominence during the early 1980s alongside keyboardist Rob Fisher. The duo signed with EMI Records in 1982 and recorded their debut album at Abbey Road Studios. They are most recognized for their 1983 synth-pop cover of ‘Always Something There to Remind Me,’ which reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. 100, and the track ‘Promises, Promises,’ which peaked at number 11. Prior to Naked Eyes, Byrne was a member of the band Neon, which included future members of Tears for Fears. His career also included providing backing vocals for Stevie Wonder—notably on the 1985 hit ‘Part-Time Lover’—and working as a writer and producer for various projects, including work for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in the 1990s. Following the death of Rob Fisher in 1999, Byrne continued to perform and record under the Naked Eyes name, releasing albums such as ‘Fumbling with the Covers’ and ‘Disguise the Limit.’ Following his death, Mexican singer Aleks Syntek publicly expressed grief, mourning Byrne as a friend and collaborator and sharing memories of their professional history and recording sessions in Los Angeles.
