Eugénio Fonseca, a prominent Portuguese social activist and former president of Cáritas Portuguesa, died at age 69 following a cardiorespiratory arrest while swimming at Figueirinha beach in Setúbal on August 12. Fonseca was widely recognized for his leadership in volunteering and his efforts to combat poverty, having served as president of the Portuguese Confederation of Volunteering and Cáritas Diocesana de Setúbal. His death drew tributes from religious and civic leaders, including the President of the Republic. During a wake held at the Setúbal Cathedral, family, friends, Church representatives, and various Portuguese political and social figures gathered to honor him. The ceremony highlighted his lifelong dedication to social intervention and unity, such as his initiative to distribute Pope Francis’s encyclical, ‘Fratelli tutti’, through a coalition of Catholic and Islamic community representatives. Observers noted a paradox regarding his final wishes: Fonseca had requested that no flowers be purchased for his funeral, asking instead that such funds be used to provide food for the poor. However, despite this specific request, flowers were present during the funeral ceremonies. On August 17, Fonseca was laid to rest following a funeral mass held at the Sé in his birthplace. During the service, Bishop Américo Aguiar praised Fonseca’s life, describing him as a Christian who refused to ignore poverty, exclusion, and injustice. Aguiar highlighted Fonseca’s proactive nature, noting his commitment to recognizing human dignity and transforming faith into social responsibility.
