Death of Portuguese journalist Joaquim Letria
Overview
Joaquim Letria, a prominent and influential Portuguese journalist and writer, has died at the age of 82.
Letria was a transformative figure in Portuguese media, particularly following the 1974 revolution that ended the country’s 40-year dictatorship. His career spanned print, radio, and television, including roles with the Associated Press, DPA, the BBC, Diário de Lisboa, RTP, and Rádio Clube. He was a pioneer of new television formats, creating and presenting programs such as ‘Directíssimo’ and ‘Tal & Qual’. He also founded the weeklies ‘O Jornal’ and ‘Tal & Qual’.
He is noted for moderating the historic 1975 televised debate between Mário Soares and Álvaro Cunhal, a landmark moment for Portuguese democracy. He was recognized for his ability to interview high-level politicians with a sense of equality and confidence. Additionally, he served as the spokesperson for President Ramalho Eanes until 1986 and held the presidency of the Journalists' Union.
Born in 1943, Letria overcame childhood polio, which affected his mobility. Colleagues described him as a ‘man-orchestra’ due to his mastery of various journalistic tools and formats.
