Death of software engineer Margaret Hamilton
Overview
Margaret Hamilton, a computer science pioneer who led the development of flight software for NASA’s Apollo missions, has died at the age of 90.
Hamilton is credited with coining the term ‘software engineering’ to establish the discipline as a professional field distinct from hardware development. She led the software efforts for both the command and lunar modules while working at MIT’s Instrumentation Laboratory. Her team developed priority-driven software that proved critical during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. When the onboard computer encountered a data overload or ‘1202 error’ during the lunar descent, the software successfully prioritized essential navigation tasks and shut down unnecessary processes, preventing a mission abort.
Born in Indiana in 1936, Hamilton began her career at MIT working on weather-prediction algorithms before joining the MIT Lincoln Laboratory to work on the SAGE air-defense system. She joined the Apollo program in 1965 and served as assistant director of the team responsible for the command and service module software.
Beyond her work with NASA, Hamilton founded Hamilton Technologies, Inc. There, she developed the Universal Systems Language and the ‘Development Before the Fact’ mathematical theory for ultra-reliable systems design. Her achievements were recognized globally; in 2016, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
