Renowned South Korean actor Choi Bool-am, often referred to as the “nation’s father,” passed away on October 29, 2026, at the age of 87. He died while receiving hospital treatment in Seoul following health complications after spinal surgery in March. Choi’s career spanned nearly seven decades, including iconic roles in “Chief Inspector” and his 22 year role as the patriarch in the long running family drama “Country Diaries.” He was also known for hosting culinary programs such as “Korean Cuisine and Dining.” Beyond his acting career, he served as a national supporter chairman for ChildFund Korea for over 40 years. Following his death, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and various figures from the entertainment and political sectors offered condolences. The government posthumously awarded him the Order of Cultural Merit, Gold Crown. Tributes have been offered by numerous colleagues, including Kim Hye-ja, who played his wife in “Country Diaries,” and actor Baek Il-seop. Actor Kim Yong-gun, who played Choi’s eldest son in the series for over two decades, expressed deep sorrow but noted he would be unable to attend the funeral. Kim stated that due to traditional customs regarding upcoming family celebrations, he was advised not to attend the wake because his son, actor Ha Jung-woo, is scheduled to marry in December. Funeral arrangements included a memorial mass at Yeouido Catholic Church and interment at Donghwa Gyeongmo Park in Paju. The funeral service was presided over by Cardinal Yeom Soo-jung and featured a tribute performance of “Ave Maria” by popera tenor Lim Hyung-joo. In accordance with his final wishes, the funeral procession included a stop at ChildFund Korea to honor his 45 years of commitment to child welfare. Attendees included actors Kim Hye-ja and Na Moon-hee, as well as former Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yu In-chon.
