Isabelle Sava, a 19-year-old taekwondo athlete of Romanian origin, died following a sudden cardiac arrest while sleeping. A silver medalist at the 2022 Taekwondo World Championships, Sava was a second-degree black belt and a law student at Queen Mary University of London. Despite resuscitation efforts by ambulance crews and a medical helicopter, she was pronounced dead on August 17. Her coach, Daniel Gorbunov, noted that she had no known medical conditions and had passed all required medical examinations prior to recent competitions. Following her death, her taekwondo academy, Trenic TKD, expressed deep sadness, and a GoFundMe campaign was established to assist her family with funeral and memorial expenses. Sava was a highly regarded athlete who had dedicated over a decade to the sport and had long aspired to compete in the Olympic Games. In addition to her athletic career, she was an active member of various student societies and served as a writer for her university’s legal advisory blog while preparing for her second year of LLB law studies.
