Cevat Özkaya, a prominent Turkish publisher and co-founder of Pınar Yayınları, died at the age of 72 following a battle with colon cancer. Özkaya was a significant figure in Turkey’s intellectual and cultural spheres. His career included serving as editor-in-chief of Umran magazine and co-founding the Araştırma ve Kültür Vakfı (Research and Culture Foundation). He was notably responsible for leading the first Turkish publication of Edward Said’s ‘Orientalism’ in 1982. Throughout his career, which transitioned from teaching to publishing in 1976, he worked to expand intellectual horizons by introducing international thinkers such as Noam Chomsky and Taha Abdurrahman to Turkish readers. He also served as the president of Mazlum-Der. A memorial service for Özkaya was held at the Neslişah Sultan Cultural Center in Fatih, Istanbul. During the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Burhanettin Can of the Umran Culture and Civilization Movement praised Özkaya as a dedicated figure who “advocated for an Islamic-centered world order and stood against perceived Western destruction.”
