Death of Venezuelan violinist Romina Rivera Cruz
Overview
Romina Rivera Cruz, a nine-year-old Venezuelan violin prodigy and member of the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras and Choirs (El Sistema), has died following a ten-day hospitalization in Acarigua, Portuguesa state. Rivera Cruz had been battling cystic fibrosis.
She gained international prominence in October 2025 when she performed Arturo Márquez’s ‘Danzón n.º 2’ as a soloist before Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican during the ‘Santos y Música para Todos’ concert.
Following her death, her mother, Claribeth Cruz, raised allegations of medical negligence. She claimed the hospital in Acarigua lacked necessary supplies, that staff were insufficiently trained in treating cystic fibrosis, and that the facility prevented the child’s regular pulmonologist from participating in treatment decisions. El Sistema and local educators have expressed sorrow, praising her dedication to music despite her chronic health condition.
