Overview

Debian developers initially moved to restrict or ban the use of artificial intelligence and Large Language Models (LLMs) in software production. Following a two-week voting period involving nine different proposals, the Debian Project adopted a middle-ground policy titled ‘Responsible Use of Generative AI’. This policy does not explicitly mandate or prohibit the use of generative AI tools for development, maintenance, or documentation. Instead, it emphasizes that all submissions must meet rigorous standards for quality, correctness, maintainability, and legal compliance, regardless of whether AI tools were used to create them.
