In late July 2026, Alphabet’s DeepMind division disbanded the AlphaFold team, reassigning most authors to Gemini-related projects, enzyme design, and genomics. On 5 August 2026, Alphabet announced a major leadership reshuffle: Demis Hassabis stepped down as DeepMind CEO to become chair and Alphabet’s chief scientist, while Koray Kavukcuoglu was promoted to senior vice-president to oversee Gemini development. Competitors are increasingly absorbing the workforce, with departing researchers moving to Anthropic (25%), Meta (21%), and OpenAI (14%). While DeepMind continues to see growth in robotics and AI for science, it is losing ground in critical areas such as large language models, multimodal AI, and computer vision. The leadership changes and subsequent market volatility caused Alphabet shares to fall by as much as 6%. Former employees suggest this attrition is driven by a perceived dilution of the lab’s original scientific research culture in favor of commercial Gemini development.
